Werewolves Movies

Last Update - 10.21.2025

Okay, in October 2025, I finished translating my old post from Russian into English. Soon I will add quite a few new movies.

Translated and updated post - Movies about werewolves, which originated on LiveJournal in 2012.

Yesterday, I was sitting there coding something, and at the same time, The Wolf Man (the new one) was playing. It occurred to me to make a list of films with similar themes, since I really love all kinds of scary thrillers and other horror movies (understandably, I'm a fan of werewolf horror movies). At the same time, I'll see if I've seen all the movies in this "category."
I searched the internet for a similar list, but in each of them I noticed that not all the films were listed, I remember more. I want to note right away that my assessment of the films will not compare werewolf films with, for example, The Silence of the Lambs or other works of art unrelated to this theme. The comparison is only between films about werewolves.
Once again: there is no comparison with other horror films here, only the narrowest possible comparison - werewolves and that's it.
A definition for those who are completely unfamiliar with the subject:

A werewolf is a mythological creature with the ability to transform (turn, change) from a human into an animal or vice versa. ©Wikipedia

Below, I will post a brief summary (mostly taken from IMDb) and my rating. If there is no IMHO section, it means I haven't seen the film (but I'm already downloading it), and I only came across it when I started making the list.

So, let's go.

1920 - 1950

Wolfblood poster

Wolfblood (1925)

Plot: After wolf blood transfusion, man thinks he's becoming a wolf.

Werewolf of London poster

Werewolf of London (1935)

As far as I know, it's the first film about werewolves (among those that have survived). As it turns out, it's one of the first films, but not the first. :) There's Wolfblood above it.

Plot: After botanist Wilfred Glendon travels to Tibet in search of a rare flower, the Mariphasa, he returns to a London haunted by murders that can only be the work of bloodthirsty werewolves.

Te Wolf man poster

The Wolf man (1941)

Plot: Upon his return to his father's estate, aristocrat Larry Talbot meets a beautiful woman, attends a mystical carnival and uncovers a horrifying curse.

IMHO: I watched it myself when I was around 7 or 8 years old and don't remember much, but the film I watched yesterday is a remake of the 1941 film. In any case, the plots are very similar. Conclusion: watch the old one for the sake of it, and the new one for pleasure =)

2021 update: I rewatched it. Excellent film. A classic! =)

The Mad Monster (1942)

Plot: A mad scientist changes his simple-minded handyman into a werewolf in order to prove his supposedly crazy scientific theories - and exact revenge.

The Undying Monster (1942)

Instead, they find two mummified bodies - one of a modern man, quite dead, and the other of an ancient Aztec, quite alive. They are able to return safely to Pasadena with both finds, but a rival professor, Janney, kills Redding and steals the body of the modern man-mummy. This he subjects to a resurrection experiment, which works - only the mummy proves to be a werewolf.

He is dedicated to peddling by the Galician towns and suffers severe attacks of epilepsy. Through the region begins to spread the rumor that he is a werewolf and that he is possessed by a demonic spirit.

Werewolves on Wheels (1971)

1975 - 1980

Nazareno Cruz and the Wolf (1975)

Plot: Nazareno Cruz is the seventh son of a couple living in a high mountain village. According to a myth, a seventh son will become a wolf on nights of the full moon. Everyone in the village is relieved when this doesn't happen. The boy grows up and falls in love with a beautiful girl, Griselda.

Wolfman (1979)

Plot: A man finds out that his family has a werewolf curse put upon them.

1980 - 1985

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Plot: American college students David Kessler and Jack Goodman on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. Jack dies. David recovers in a hospital, where he has nightmares.

IMHO: American Werewolf is generally not bad, if you're not too picky. Keep in mind that the film was released in the last century.

The Howling (1981)

Plot: After a bizarre and near deadly encounter with a serial killer, a television newswoman is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem.

IMHO: As for "The Howling", I really liked it, but as usual, the first film is the best. At the time, I searched for it for a long time, downloading it piece by piece from various websites (not even torrents!), but it was worth it. In short, all fans of this genre should definitely watch it! I still have the discs with it, and sometimes I put it on "for background" when I'm in the mood.

Wolfen (1981)

Plot: A New York cop investigates a series of brutal deaths that resemble animal attacks.

The Wolf (1983)

Plot: Ex-guerrilla Kacper, possessed by late wife Maryna's spirit, is pursued by female werewolf. He recognizes werewolf traits in Julia, a countess involved with Austrian officer.

Monster Dog (1984)

Plot: A rock star returns to his childhood home to shoot a music video while a pack of wild dogs are on the loose killing off the local residents.

The Company of Wolves (1984)

Plot: A teenage girl in a country manor falls asleep while reading a magazine, and has a disturbing dream involving wolves prowling the woods below her bedroom window.

IMHO: A fairy tale. Well, it's more of a fairy tale than a horror story, but the transformation into a wolf is well done, in detail =) It's worth watching once.

1985 - 1990

Howling II: ... Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1985)

Plot: A man discovers that his sister was a werewolf, and helps an investigator track down a gang of the monsters through the United States and eastern Europe.

IMHO: The movie was disappointing. After the first film, it wasn't enjoyable to watch, especially considering that I watched them back-to-back. I watched it to check it off my list and to avoid a gap between the first and third films.

Silver Bullet (1985)

Plot: In a small town, brutal killings start to plague the close-knit community. Marty Coslaw, a paraplegic boy, is convinced the murders are the doings of a werewolf.

IMHO: Stephen King (I love movies based on his books as much as I love werewolf movies) with a werewolf movie. You have to watch it. I would definitely give it an 8/10. A classic example of "The Werewolf in a Small Town".

Howling III (1987)

Plot: A female werewolf runs away from her family, and falls in love with a man who works in the movie business, while a sociologist who studies these creatures is looking for proof of their existence.

IMHO: 1987 and the new Howling. Let me remind you that I watched the Howling series in a row, and the third one looks much better than the second one =)

Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988)

Plot: A successful author moves to a small town after suffering a mental breakdown and is tormented by demons and werewolves.

IMHO: 1988, once again the Howling, which is actually a remake of the first film. Not bad, let's watch it.

Howling V: The Rebirth (1989)

Plot: A group of strangers visit an ancient Hungarian castle and bring along a werewolf.

IMHO: It's actually a pretty good part, but I only realized that after watching it several times. :)

My Mom's a Werewolf (1989)

Plot: After being bitten by a mysterious pet-shop owner, house-wife Leslie begins a gruesome transformation into a werewolf. Her only hope is her young daughter Jennifer who races against time to stop Leslie from turning into an animal for good.

1990 - 1995

Powrót wilczycy (1990)

Plot: Krakow, second half of the 19th century. The young artist Kamil is getting ready to marry Krystyna. They arrive at the palace of Stefani Ziembalska, Kamil's cousin. The she-wolf Julia once haunted this palace before she was rendered harmless. During the night, Krystyna is attacked by something that looks like a werewolf.

Meridian (1990)

Plot: Two American girls in Italy are drugged and raped by an evil magician and his twin brother who suffer from a curse that turns them into beastmen each day. One of the girls falls for the good twin and decides to help him break the curse.

Howling VI: The Freaks (1991)

Plot: A villainous carnival owner traps a young werewolf to include in his growing menagerie of inhuman exhibits.

IMHO: Heh, the year I was born, and the sixth part of the series is already coming out =) A vampire appeared in the film, and that's bad, because I believe that in movies about werewolves, werewolves should be the only evil =( And the film itself is just for show, again.

The Boneyard (1991)

Plot: Children turned into zombies wreak havoc in a coroner's building with just a burned-out psychic, an experienced cop and two coroners to stop the madness.

Lyumi (1991)

Plot: Half-wolf, half-man, 7 feet tall. He came from mountains to rewrite the "Red Riding Hood" story.

IMHO: Surprisingly for the USSR, it's a worthwhile film. Of course, you have to take into account the age of the film, but it's definitely a 7/10!

Sleepwalkers (1992)

Plot: A mother-and-son team of shapeshifters move to a small town to seek out a young virgin to feed on.

IMHO: Once again Stephen King and once again werewolves, though not quite standard ones. I never quite understood what they turn into, as only part of their faces change, and for some reason they are afraid of cats. A decent average film, worth watching.

Full Eclipse (1993)

Plot: The LA police department have a special team of officers with a talent for reducing big-time crime. The team leader has an excellent track record for crime reduction in other big cities, but his methods are unconventional, and so is he - he's a werewolf.

Wolf (1994)

Plot: Publisher Will Randall becomes a demon wolf and has to fight to keep his job.

IMHO: An excellent film, Nicholson is at his best as always. I'd give it a 9/10.

1995 - 2000

Werewolf (1995)

Plot: Unscrupulous archaeologists try to take advantage of an outbreak of lycanthropy prompted by the discovery of a werewolf skeleton in the Arizona desert.

Howling: New Moon Rising (1995)

Plot: A small town desert community in southern California begins experiencing a number of brutal, werewolf-like slayings, following the arrival of a strange motorcyclist.

IMHO: A decent representative of the genre. I watched it several times, and it's quite suitable as a "working background" movie. :)

Bad Moon (1996)

Plot: After being bitten by a werewolf in the jungle, Ted looks for a cure. His lawyer sister, with a son and dog, invites him to park his camper by her house in the woods and live out of her fridge.

IMHO: A decent representative of the genre. I watched it several times, and it's quite suitable as a "working background" movie. :)

Lycantropus: The Moonlight Murders (1997)

Plot: Waldemar Daninsky, a best-seller writer, is exhausted and needs help from Dr. Westenra, the daughter of the local coroner. Meanwhile, gruesome murders are happening.

An American Werewolf in Paris (1997)

Plot: An American man unwittingly gets involved with French werewolves who have developed a serum allowing them to transform at will.

IMHO: A little comedy, a lot of horror, and the result is a pretty good movie. I've watched it more than once, sometimes just putting it on in the background. I'd give it a solid 7/10.

2000 - 2005

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Plot: Two death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf.

IMHO: Very good. Rating 7.5/10

Dog Soldiers (2002)

Plot: A routine military exercise turns into a nightmare in the Scottish wilderness.

IMHO: Great movie! Rating: 8.5/10

Underworld (2003)

Plot: Selene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves, while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.

IMHO: Overall, the film is good for an action movie, BUT I generally don't like films about vampires versus zombies or werewolves versus vampires and so on. And I don't consider this film to be solely about werewolves. That's why I'm not adding the next parts to the list.

Polnolunie (2005)

Plot: In the 1970s, tragedy strikes the family of a young teacher named Lebedev, who lives on the outskirts of a Buryat village. Wolves were rampaging through the village. They did not spare Alexei Lebedev himself or his wife Katya. During the bloody massacre carried out by the predators, the man and woman were killed. Their young sons, Kirill and Philip, somehow managed to escape the fate of their parents. But one of the boys was bitten on the hand by an old wolf.

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)

Plot: Set in 19th Century Canada, Brigette and her sister Ginger take refuge in a Traders' Fort which later becomes under siege by some savage werewolves.

IMHO: Much better than the first film, perhaps because of the time period in which all these events take place. Rating: 9/10.

Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed (2004)

Plot: Ginger's sister Brigitte, now a werewolf herself, must try to find a cure for her blood lust before the next full moon while hiding out in a rehab clinic from a relentless werewolf.

IMHO: Okay, but Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning is better. :)

Romasanta (2004)

Plot: An uproar is caused when some mutilated cadavers are discovered, giving way to the legend of the "Werewolf of Allariz". A traveling vendor rolls through the forest in his old wagon. A woman from every village on his route faithfully awaits him. He's attractive, intelligent, charming.... But he's also the monster feared by all.

IMHO: The film gets a 7.5-8/10 =) Although it's not quite "that kind of thing," it's still very interesting to watch.

2005 - 2010

Cursed (2005)

Plot: A werewolf loose in Los Angeles changes the lives of three young adults who, after being mauled by the beast, learn they must kill it in order to avoid becoming werewolves themselves.

IMHO: 7/10 movie, the silly comedy moments are infuriating…

The Beast of Bray Road (2005)

Plot: Werewolf sightings in Walworth County, Wisconsin lead a sheriff to investigate a series of deaths caused by a creature with human and wolf DNA.

IMHO: Just your typical trash, but worth watching once.

Big Bad Wolf (2006)

Plot: After being attacked by a werewolf, a teenager believing it may have been his stepfather attempts to expose him.

IMHO: A standard average, although the werewolf is not bad in terms of appearance after the transformation. =) Rating 6.5/10.

Horrors of War (2006)

Plot: On the WWII front lines, Allied soldiers collide with Nazi occult experiments that turn battlefields into nightmares.

Skinwalkers (2006)

Plot: A 12-year-old boy and his mother become the targets of two warring werewolf packs, each with different intentions and motives.

IMHO: Rating: 5/10. I don't know why, but I didn't like the movie.

Blood and Chocolate (2007)

Plot: A teenage werewolf is torn between honoring her family's secret and her love for a man.

IMHO: Romeo and Juliet, Capulets and Montagues, blah blah blah, "what drama, what drama" ='( Give us more horror, not all this stuff! Rating 3/10, I regret watching it at all=\

Werewolf: The Devil's Hound (2007)

Plot: Kevin had it all. An exciting pyrotechnic job, a loving family, and a beautiful wife. Until a chance encounter with the new girl in town helped him release his inner beast.

Hybrid (2007)

Plot: After an accident causes him to lose his sight, Aaron Scates finds himself in a fight for survival. He must learn to embrace his inner animal or become another failed experiment.

Never Cry Werewolf (2008)

Plot: Jared Martin moves next door to the Hansetts, along with his hot motorcycle and eerie, ill-tempered dog. Although everyone else in the neighborhood takes an instant liking to him, Loren Hansett can't get over the bad vibes her new neighbor gives her. She starts to spy on his nocturnal activities and comes to believe that a recent killing might the work of a werewolf...

IMHO: Well, it's okay. You can watch it depending on your mood. I would rate it 7.5/10.

Dark Moon Rising (2009)

Plot: Small-town girl meets mysterious drifter boy, they fall in love. Only in this case, the boy brings with him a family curse and unimaginable horror that rains hell upon the small town.

Maneater (2009)

2010 - 2015

The Hair of the Beast (2010)

Plot: Takes place in 1665 in New France at a time when a part of Canada was colonialized by France. Joseph Côté escapes from a prison in order to avoid death by hanging. While some colonial soldiers are chasing him, Joseph takes the identity of a Jesuit and hides in the seigneury of Beaufort where most men are waiting for "daughters of the king." (French women who were sent to Canada in order to find a husband.) At night, Joseph finds out that there are werewolves that terrorize the village.

IMHO: Great movie! 8.5/10!

The Wolfman (2010)

Plot: Upon his return to his ancestral homeland, an American man is bitten and subsequently cursed by a werewolf.

IMHO: A remake of the first werewolf movie =) The best film about werewolves! 10/10 A must-see!

Nightbeasts (2010)

Plot: A father and son on a weekend hunting trip encounter supernatural horror in the woods.

Hyenas (2011)

Plot: Roving clans of shape-shifting human/hyena creatures prowl and hunt for human prey. They are hunted by one man seeking revenge for the death of his loved ones.

IMHO: One viewing, no more

Red Riding Hood (2011)

Plot: A teenage girl finds herself in deathly straits when her village sets out to hunt the werewolf that terrorizes it every full moon.

IMHO: It's more of a fairy tale, of course, but it's worth watching. I'd give it an 8, and for the actress who plays Valerie, I'd add another 0.5, for a total of 8.5/10 =)

The Howling: Reborn (2011)

Plot: A teenage outcast discovers he is a werewolf, and must battle a pack of the brutal creatures when they threaten him and his new girlfriend.

IMHO: For the series, it's average. 6.5/10. Although it seems that this film has nothing to do with the franchise…

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012)

Plot: Set in a 19th century village, a young man studying under a local doctor joins a team of hunters on the trail of a wolf-like creature.

IMHO: The film is quite acceptable, if only the vampire character were not so dull; she would be excellent! 8/10

Plot: A werewolf virus is unleashed upon New York, and Major Hoffman looks for a cure while Lt. General Monning wants to establish a new canine army.

Wer (2013)

IMHO: Awesome! Fantastic! Must see! 9/10

Wolves (2014)

Plot: A boy is trying to find out about his family history and stumbles upon a town of lycans.

IMHO: Well, it's okay, but it could have been better. It's more of an action movie than a horror movie. A werewolf against all other werewolves, etc.

Werewolf Rising (2014)

Plot: Emma is a country girl who left for the big city only to return years later with big problems. And when she returns to her childhood home deep in the Arkansas mountains for some well needed rest, relaxation, and soul searching, her problems have only just begun. Plot: When passengers on a train are attacked by a creature, they must band together in order to survive until morning.

IMHO: This is not a continuation of the "Howl" series, but the film is very good! 9/10
